A Classic Reborn

The Classic Jersey was Rapha’s first ever product. A bold expression of the company’s mission to create the world’s best cycling apparel, it changed the industry. Predominantly black and cut from an unorthodox merino-wool-based fabric, Bicycling Magazine’s Editor Bill Strickland declared it the ‘best bike jersey the world has ever seen.’

Twelve years in the making, Rapha introduces a new generation, the Classic Jersey II. Brought up to speed for 2016, this highly evolved design is cut from a new proprietary merino-wool-based fabric, milled to Rapha’s exact specification. Called RPM150 (Rapha Performance Merino, the 150 indicates grams per square metre), it is lighter, softer and more breathable than generic merino-blends, adaptable to a huge range of conditions.

Not stopping at the fabric, the construction of the jersey has also improved with a reworked fit and sections bonded rather than stitched. This reduces weight and bulk even further.

About the new RPM150 fabric

Helping your body breathe in hot conditions and insulating when the temperature drops, this fabric is a product of Rapha’s tireless R&D to create the world’s best cycling apparel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful, well constructed wool jersey I really like the performance, styling, and construction of this jersey. My only wish is that it was longer in the front. I'm 6'4", and a medium build. I bought a large jersey. If it were not for the fact that I always wear bibs, I would have returned it. The front could easily be another inch longer for someone my height. Maybe Rapha could make a tall version? That being said, I can't recommend it enough for the reasons I mentioned above. The jersey is beautiful, classically understated, yet spot on in styling. I love how it keeps you cool in all types of temperatures when riding in Seattle. I am surprised to find out that it is cool enough for 75-80 degree days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great update I now have both the original Classic Jersey and this new updated version. Though based on only one ride, I would rate this a solid improvement over the original. Fabric is lighter, fit is slimmer, arms are a bit longer; all welcome improvements. The weight of the original limited its utility for me. I can see getting more use out of this garment. With respect to some of the other reviews, I find this more true to size than the original, which seems a bit baggy. Yes, it's a bit shorter in the front, but the advantage is that there is less fabric bunching up when riding. It's not nearly as short in the front as the pro team jersey.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from What is happening at Rapha?! This jersey was a replacement for a black classic jersey that had faded significantly over one years use along with stitching coming undone around the pockets. This being the second black classic to fade in such a way. I opted for a blue jersey as a replacement. On its arrival the jersey construction is different from earlier classic jerseys and when compared with the two other classic jerseys I own feels built down to price rather than a quality item. I have been a customer since 2005 and often a defender of the brand not on the basis of what it has undoubtedly come to represent but because the quality of the clothing was very good along with customer service. You will know all to well what I am eluding to because my case will not be alone. I would welcome a return to the days of unreserved quality as it is becoming harder for me to justify the price tag of clothing that appears to be loosing its edge. Feel free to contact me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Poor fit This jersey looks fantastic, is extremely comfortable and performs well, but the fit is disappointing. I've always used the small size using Rapha, and so I ordered this in a small. The fit is good on arms and torso, but it is weirdly baggy at the back. It makes using the rear pockets annoying and it's not very flattering. For the price one has to pay for this jersey, it should not fit this poorly. Disappointing, Rapha.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice jersey I bought it two weeks ago, already used it a few times. It has quite a good fit in the upper part, and is more loose in the lower part, which surprised me a bit. However, it occurs that might be quite good for fully filled jersey pockets, which are very nicely profiled and quite deep. It has a regulating cord on the bottom rim to adjust it to your body. The material is a composite of some elastic fabric with merino wool, quite thick, so might be quite warm in hot weather. I tested it in the temperatures between 18 and 25 C and it was ok, with a Rapha merino baselayer tee under it, and I was content with the performance. Nice product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for fall in N. California This jersey is quite comfortable and breathes well. It is great on morning rides here in northern California, especially when the temperature is in the low 50s at the start but in the 70s by the end of the ride. I bought this as part of the classics bundle, and it works great with the merino arm warmers at the start of the ride. Take the arm warmers off about an hour in, and still not too warm at the end of the ride. I am 5'11" and 210 lbs with a 43" chest, and the XL fits well, consistent with Rapha's size chart. The only niggle is that it would be a bit more flattering off the bike if it were about an inch longer in front.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great jersey, but still considered the "classic"? If you've read all of the other reviews you'll notice a few common comments on the Classic II jersey - that it has a lighter fabric, the sleeves are longer and that the front is shorter. All true, when measured against the previous Classic. I wear a size small and the Classic II sleeves are about 2cm longer (hopefully eliminates the arm warmer gap) and the front is about 2cm shorter (you need to wear bib shorts, not regular shorts, unless you want to show some skin). The arms are a little bit tighter, chest fit is about the same and the lower hem "feels" a bit more snug, although that measurement is within a 0.5cm of the original Classic. It could be that the extra material from the hem and elastic is higher up on your mid section making it feel tighter. On the bike the jersey does it's job, just as the previous Classic version did. The lighter material will make it more flexible to use in warmer weather, although I had no problems with the original as I live in the Pacific North West and it rarely gets uncomfortably hot here. Jersey construction is fantastic, just like the original. Gone is the stitched Rapha logo on the arm band, replaced with a heat-stamped version. If you like subtle branding, then this a plus, but I kind of miss the embroidered logo. I would have been perfectly happy if Rapha kept the original Classic jersey and only added the longer sleeves. With all of the changes, it's more performance-focused and remains one of the best cycling jerseys available, but may not appeal to as broad a market as the previous version because of the slightly slimmer and shorter fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Jersey, Great Medium Weight Solid medium weight jersey that looks great. With a pair of arm warmers can easily navigate the crisp 50 degree mornings in san francisco... but is also not to warm when the sun comes up. Only thing that is annoying so far is there is this little pink nylon hook on the inside back shoulder that keeps irritating my shoulder. Once I cut it off, i'm sure it will be fine... just not sure why they put it there, it is itchy. Also, in terms of sizing, I'm 5'9 165 and a medium fits well. The large was tight on me but boxy around the shoulders so i went down. This (as with all the rapha jerseys) is very short in the belly area, so it is best worn with bibs.

How does the thickness of Classic jersey II compare to the old "lightweight jersey" ? No, not super lightweight, I mean lightweight.

Asked by: Ti Yam
Hi, the Classic Jersey II is cut from a new merino blend creating a Classic Jersey that is lighter, softer, and more breathable. It will be similar in thickness to the Lightweight Jersey, which was slightly thinner than the original Classic Jersey.

Hi, is Rapha Classic Jersey II suitable to wear in hot summer weather?

Asked by: Rico Lim
Hi, As we all regulate temperature differently it is hard to advise how the jersey will behave in hot and humid conditions, exertion levels will also effect this. Rapha Performance Merino 150 is designed to help your body breathe in hot conditions and insulating when the temperature drops.

Does the Classic II still have the pump sleeve in the jersey pocket? Does it also have the cord routing loops as well as the eyelet for the cord into the jersey pocket?

Asked by: TTownThomas
Hi, the Classic Jersey II still features the cord routing loops, as well as the eyelet. It does not however feature the pump sleeve in the middle pocket, on the rear.

How thick/thin would you say this is vs the current Lightweight jersey? Is it about the same, or thicker?

Asked by: Dogmatic1320
Hi, while the jersey contains our RPM150 fabric - lighter, softer and more breathable - it is not as thin as the lightweight jersey.
