Lightweight, packable and water-resistant insulation

Long-distance riders often encounter a wide range of conditions, so a lightweight layer that is both warm and packable is essential. The Insulated Brevet Gilet provides exceptional warmth, while highly breathable Polartec Alpha insulation ensures you won’t overheat during harder efforts.

The gilet features reflective detailing for visibility, and a water-shedding DWR (durable water repellent) coating for added protection in rain showers. Thanks to the hydrophobic properties of the Polartec Alpha insulation, the gilet wont saturate in the same way that natural down insulation will, and is quick drying. Mesh side panels stretch to fit over full pockets and a zip placket keeps out the wind, and when not in use, the gilet rolls into an elasticated loop at the neck to stay tightly stored. Please note that the two-way zip included on this product at launch has been replaced by a standard zip.

Karen Whittier, product manager for insulation at Polartec, explains the science behind Polartec Alpha:

Polartec Alpha was engineered as an active insulation to regulate core body temperatures during both dynamic and static activities. This ‘adaptive’ breathability helps eliminate the need for shedding or adding layers while on the move, making it ideal for cycling.

By keeping moisture vapour moving freely through the fabric, it increases overall air exchange and drastically speeds up dry times, providing thermal regulated comfort. Polartec Alpha is also highly compressible, made with a stable core… that prevents ‘fibre migration’ to keep a uniform consistency, even after heavy wear and repeated laundering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile for loads of temp ranges. We had this product in test for nearly two years through numerous changes to fabric and fit, it's been rigorously tested. The gilet was designed with versatility in mind and during test was worn over and countless types of other Rapha garments. Wearing it underneath a wind jacket makes it a super warming mid-layer and over a long sleeve jersey makes it a cool day gilet. I've worn it audaxing/randonneuring with a Merino Base Layer, Long Sleeve Jersey and Wind Jacket down to 0 degrees. With a Rain Jacket in your jersey pocket this combo can take you through 9 months of British weather. Very versatile. Very comfy. I'll have one in my wardrobe forever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A piece of kit I never knew I needed This is one of those pieces of kit I never knew I needed until I bought it. For chilly mornings, when a full jacket is too hot, the Insulated Brevet Gilet works very well. With just enough insulation to keep your core warm but sufficient breathability to prevent overheating, the gilet has become my "go to" item for morning rides. The two-way zip is a great innovation, that allows easy ventilation as the morning warms up. I haven't needed to take the gilet off yet, so can't comment on the pack size and ease of stowability in a jersey pocket. I bought the grey gilet, as the pink stripe compliments the stripe of the blue brevet jerseys.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent and versatile vest. Purchased along the Pro Team gilet/vest for versatility. The pro team vest fits in the rear pockets easily, and surprisingly this garment does too, thanks to the thin side panel mesh and the sewn in elastic band. The insulated front and rear panels offer good insulation with limited moisture transport. The side panels however offers a mesh that gives you evaporation With minimal wind exposure. A great transitional garment for use in spring/fall along with other garments or as a life saver in changing conditions. I could have wanted som more protection for the neck, but pairing the vest with a Buff gives you more versatility.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant, absolutely brilliant As a pensioner with a heart condition the phrase "high intensity" is a thing of the past. I still spend too much on the bike though and having used this insulated gilet on two of my last three rides I have found that at 3/4°C and between a winter base layer and outer jacket this insulated gilet is marvellous. As temperatures rise to 7/8°C during the ride I still stay dry and warm. For me this combination works. Previously I would have started out using a rain jacket as the third layer but this gets sweaty too quickly, so take it off and get cold. So keeping warm and dry must all be about breathability. Now if only Rapha did motors!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best looking, most functional vest out there I love putting this thing on! It is so light and portable, that I don't think twice about bringing it along- which was not the case with my Castelli Gabba/fawesome. It rolls right up and looks great with my brevet or classic jersey. The reflective elements are truly impressive. Oh, and it keeps you warm and its as windproof as i could imagine. Some others have dissed the two way zipper- and yes, it is not perfect, but there is a system: flip the zipper up, and it will lock; flip it down, and you can move it. Admittedly, a stiffer lock would make this a better product. I never thought I would need or use a 2 way zipper, but its just another one of those Rapha details I have grown to admire and appreciate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very warm, packable, and lightweight Bought this immediately when it became available. I hate being overdressed in the morning and then having nowhere to put all the extra items ( also hate bulging, sagging jersey pockets) as the day gets warmer. I ride doubles and wanted something for cold mornings, that turn to hot days, and back to cool afternoons. My first ride in this was a mid 40s commute to work. To see how effective it would be I intentionally wore only Classic Bibs with the original sportwool Lightweight Jersey with no base layer underneath, a combination that would have seen me chilled and shivering. The vest did exactly what I wanted it to do. It blocked wind effectively and it generated a comfortable warmth in my torso. My forearms were cold but my core was at the perfect insulated temperature. Later, on a short rise in the sun, I unzipped from the bottom up, allowing heat to escape from my back while still keeping my throat and chest protected. I've always wanted Rapha jackets and vests to have two way zips, one of the most important features a jacket or vest should have, and wondered why they don't till now. Packability into a jersey pocket is very important and this vest meets that requirement. Firstly, it's incredibly light. I haven't weighed them, but my impression is that it's lighter than the Classic Vest (or Gilet) and the Wind Jacket. It rolls into a compressible tube that doesn't overly bulge a pocket. It's supposed to be DW treated but I haven't tried it in the rain. Fit notes: I'm 5'11" 152-154lbs. 39in chest, 31 waist. Size small is perfect. This vest just rocketed to the top of my list of favorite, very functional pieces of cycling clothing. Thanks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from How do I love thee, let me count the ways I suffer in the cold and never found a gilet that kept me warm but packed down to a usable size if I needed to take it off until now. This is a wonderful item of clothing, it is extremely comfortable, fits well and it does exactly what the blurb says - it keeps you nice and warm. Not too hot, not overheating, just nice and warm. The two way zip is a fantastic idea and the ability to ‘lock’ the bottom of the zip by flicking up the tab (thanks for other reviewers for that heads up) is a great idea. The first ride out in it I rode through a steady shower for around 45 minutes, the gilet dealt with the water well and kept me dry and warm – perfection. I bought the black version, looks great over the top of any jersey.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PERFECT BALANCE I thought I would try this after using a 'normal' gilet for a few years now, WOW! amazing garment! packs away just as neatly as any other gilet but perfectly heavy enough to keep the cold at bay. the reverse zip, large zipper for you to grab with gloves on, the reflective details, stretch side panels and packing loop are great features! I have purchased a lot of Rapha gear over the years and this is by far my favourite item!

How does the insulation compare to Primaloft when it comes to water resistence? And how water resistant is the outer fabric/seems?

Asked by: AC84
Hi, this insulation has better moisture transfer and is faster drying than Primaloft. The outer fabric is wind, but not water resistant. However, it does have a DWR finish to provide a degree of water resistance. Polartec Alpha has great breath ability, and this gilet's functionality would be defeated by the use of a laminate waterproof fabric.

Hi, how does this compare to the Rapha Gilet in terms of warmth?

Asked by: Bern03
Hi, this gilet is warmer than the Rapha Gilet. It is made with Polartec Alpha to ensure it is still highly breathable.

Is this suitable for washing after EVERY ride or is that not advisable?

Asked by: R_Am
Hi, this gilet could be washed after every ride but this is unlikely to be necessary as it does not sit directly against the skin.

I'm 6'0 with chest size is 40-41 inches and I have a slim build. Should I go for a medium or large. In US sizes I'm typically medium and like things on the fitted side. How does this gilet fit? Would you suggest medium or large?

Asked by: Daniel604
Hi, based on the measurement you provided, we would normally recommend a large. This gilet has a fit in line with the Brevet range and if you like you kit particularly fitted you could try a medium in this item. As always, we do have a free 90 day returns policy if needed.

What's the temperature range, weight and pack size please?

Asked by: SteveC
Hi, it is always difficult to give a precise temperature range as everyone regulates temperature differently and it will also depend on exertion level. The Brevet Insulated Jersey is very versatile and could be used in any season as an additional layer. It is an extremely lightweight item considering its insulation and weighs <150g. The Gilet rolls into a small elasticated loop at the neck and so easily packs away into any pocket. I hope that helps.
