Versatile merino layer for winter cycling

The latest addition to the Rapha base layer system has been created for extended rides in cold conditions. The Winter Base Layer is made from 100% New Zealand merino and uses an 18.9 micron yarn for exceptional softness against the skin. The natural fibre is also itch-free, high-wicking and odour resistant. Made from a heavier weight yarn than Rapha’s regular base layers, the roll neck can be worn as normal for standard insulation, or with the neck pulled up over the face to work in the same way as the Rapha Winter Collar. The Winter Base Layer has raglan sleeves so bag straps won’t rub, while flatlock seams ensure it won’t chafe.

Reviews:

"Deserving a full review of its own, Rapha's Winter Base Layer is a must-have companion to pair with your Rapha jacket. By sealing in warmth, rapidly wicking moisture and fostering exceptional comfort without donning the look of nerdy cycling apparel, Rapha's Winter Base Layer is without a doubt a flawless garment to add to your cycling wardrobe."

"Due to the quality merino and the roll top neck, I found the Winter Base Layer to be ideal for the very coldest days. At temperatures of around 5C, I felt comfortable wearing just the base layer with a mid-weight windproof jacket over the top. For anything colder, the additional of a mid-layer and proper winter jacket has me pedalling comfortably down to -3C, or about the coldest it's gotten this winter down south."

"Cyclists, take note. Rapha’s merino base layers are designed with flatlock seams to prevent chafing when riding. They come in a range of sleeve lengths as well as styles. This particular super soft roll-neck can be pulled up over the face to keep icy winds out."

Body sizing

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortalbe, warm Very comfy and warm to wear at about 5 degree Celcius. For cycling, your body can get warm fairly quickly. So it is good to wear cycling without full exertion; otherwise, it can be sweaty a bit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best winter-base layer, very multi-sportversatile I've got 3 of this with different colours. I mostly use them for cycling but the black one even for casual dressing. The fit is nice and comfortable, the long neck is perfect to cover you up to the nose. I just used them in climbing passo Gavia (Italy, 2650mtrs) in the afternoon (summit still closed due to snow, open until the tunnel) and despite the effort of the climbs (up to 16%), I never overheated. They wick away sweat pretty fast helping to keep you warm. I've also used them for skiing and they perform very good. On consecutive sport days I only rinse them in the evening and are dry in the morning, and very important, they are not smelly!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent everyday cold weather layer. I have worn this for nearly every day since I received it in mid fall (now early March). I commute by bike every day and typically wear this on the commute and then at work under a button up shirt - works perfectly in both situations: no stank! The name is a bit iffy though - I wouldn't really consider this a "winter" baselayer. On days when it has been proper winter (0C and below) I need to wear this under the deep winter base layer, under with either a Transfer gilet or a Patagonia Nano Puff jacket all under a classic softshell to arrive comfortably warm after 30minutes. Maybe I need to ride harder, maybe I need to ride longer, maybe I need to not live in Canada - not sure, but I know for me this is a fall weight base layer. Either way though, based on how often I have reached for this, how flawless it has aged (despite being 100% merino which normally means holes within a few months), it is going strong and still looks excellent. About sizing: for a proper fit I went with a small despite being a medium in nearly every other road product (classic jersey 1 and 2, super light weight jersey, transfer gilet, softshell jacket and pants, winter jersey, wind jacket, club jersey, etc etc), so if you're looking for a proper baselayer fit, maybe order two sizes and send the wrong one back.

Hello, the other base layers are recommended that you size down from your normal size jerseys/jackets. Is this winter base layer the same?

Asked by: vincenz
Hi, we recommend you also size down for this base layer. It has a high degree of stretch and comes up slightly large.

How is this differentiate to the regular long sleeve merino base layer besides a turtle neck? Is this base layer's merino wool material thicker than the long sleeve merino base layer?

Asked by: Gergely
Hi, The winter base is made from a heavier weight yarn than Rapha’s regular base layers, the roll neck can be worn as normal for standard insulation, or with the neck pulled up over the face to work in the same way as the Rapha Winter Collar.
