Cycling over-shorts ideal for commuting

Rapha’s Touring Shorts are a road riding interpretation of the cycling overshorts known to mountain bikers as “baggies”. They are made from a lightweight, breathable fabric and are versatile enough for both urban commutes and longer rides.

Designed to be worn over bib shorts, Touring Shorts have a slim, contemporary cut to ensure they won’t flap in the wind while on the bike. Performance features include a non-slip panel in the waistband to hold the shorts in position when riding and satin tapes inside the hems to stop them catching on undershorts.

Other details include a special gusset to prevent chafing and easy-to-use waist adjusters. A zipped pocket at the front of the shorts is cut shallow to prevent objects digging into the leg when cycling and the shorts have an additional rear pocket for carrying valuables. Reflective piping on the back of the legs helps make the rider more visible when riding in poor light.

Reviews:

"If you don’t want the Lycra budgie-smuggling look or equally unflattering “baggies”, Rapha’s classically tailored touring shorts tick all the right boxes."
The 50 Best Cycling Gear
Simon Usborne: The Independent

‟These slim-fitting shorts have tech DNA, including zip pockets all around for security and a stretch nylon that moves as you pedal. Wear them alone for short missions or over your bibs for all-day affairs.”

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good pair of shorts Brought these for my weekend rides and sportives as I am nott a fan of Lycra. Shorts are well made with nice little touches like the silk hem liner to prevent chaffing. Fit is perfect I'm a 34" waist brought large, legs are a nice tailored fit that do not flap in the wind. My one gripe that stops these from being a 5 star product is the lack of pockets. There is the large zipped pocket on the rear waistband that my iPhone 6 fits nicely into and one tiny key fob pocket on the front waist band. A side pocket would be a welcome addition as these are sold as a touring short. However the lack of pockets will not prevent me from purchasing a second pair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rad shorts! Great for mountain biking & commuting My first test of these shorts was on a 30 mile mtb ride that ended at a creek where I then waded and fished. Needless to say, they were not clean by the end of the day. The fit was much better than I expected. They come to just above the knee (I'm 5'10" / 160lbs and a 30 waist is a perfect fit). I'd prefer a slightly shorter length, but other than that, they're great. They don't sag on longer rides (which I'd imagine was a key point in designing a touring short) and contrary to some reviews, I can fit my iphone 6 and a small Tanner Goods wallet in the back pocket. I also have a pair of Kitsbow shorts and Mission and these seem to be the sturdiest - something about the elastic band in the rear makes them fit really well on the waist.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slim fitting goodness. I have 3 of these bought over separate orders. They are that good. A back pocket for cash and an iphone. A small one in front just nice for a car key remote. The lack of side pockets help keep this pair of shorts neat. Anything else you need to bring along that wouldn't fit in a pair of pants should be in your hydration backpack anyway. The material is outstanding, tough and resilient against abrasion without being thick and stuffy. I use this for trail riding because I am not into the baggy loud look of most mountain bike brands. Cycling bibs or tights does not fit my enduro bike, so this is perfect for me. There is a silky band around the openings which makes the shorts non stick to thighs while cycling and the ring hook zippers are great for handling with gloves. The elastic material around the waist is a good idea for movement around the bike. These details really count.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality. Use frame-mount mini pump. Got these shorts so I wouldn’t have to wear lycra on the roadbike since I came from mountainbiking. Slim fitting and come down to my knees. Shorts looks good and similar to shorts worn by bike messengers at work . Only time they flapped was on a very fast +35 mph descent. Don’t put your mini pump in your rear jersey pocket because it will chaff the upper-rear stretch fabric of the shorts and cause piling (use frame mount). Shorts are also great for post-ride lunch with friends at regular restaurants because you don’t feel like you’re walking around over-exposed like you would in tight lycra.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent shorts, superb fit, can be worn anywhere I wear my touring shorts almost daily from March to November. For cycling, touring, about town, on the beach, frisbee, in the workplace, out for supper, travelling, they're lightweight, fast drying, pack up small, a fabulous fit, hard-wearing, simple, classic and can cut it anywhere. There are also two useful discreet zip pockets, the front one tiny, perfect for a key, a condom, some loose change, etc., the rear pocket larger, good for a phone, a small wallet/credit card. I've even worn my shorts along with a smart white tailored linen short sleeved shirt to a friend's wedding ceremony/reception in Bath this last summer and looked way sharper than many of the very high-earning, besuited guests, overdressed as they were for the sweltering end of June temperatures. Sometimes you have bits of clothing that you just live in until they fall apart. I've been living in these for nearly two years but they're still in very tidy condition and a long, long way from falling apart. I haven't even cracked open the packaging of my spare pair yet. Bravo! Another example of why I never regret paying for quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top marks I bought these for my daily commute and they're perfect. I'm 180cm /70kg and Medium fits just right. I've worn over padded shorts too and they're still comfortable. The material is lightweight and has ample stretch..... I also use them for my bootcamp sessions. I suspect they will probably dry quickly too for the days I get caught in the rain on my way to work. I'd consider buying another pair but if the Randonnee shorts are made from the same material then I'd probably opt for them due to the superior styling and additional pockets. In summary, I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not as good as they used to be Am on my 3rd pair of these in the last few years and the updates they have made aren't for the better (Sorry Rapha chaps). The new zips / toggles are painful to use and counter intuitive and can dig (especially the front zip) when cycling. Still a great short but the old zip layout combo was better...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great build quality / materials, light on pockets Love the look and feel of these shorts, very cool when riding and quick drying after a minor rain showers. However, in my personal opinion, these lack in pockets. There are two pockets, a small one at the front big enough for a credit card / paper money and one at the back you can (just) fit an iPhone 6 in. I realise these are for riding but when down the pub I would love one of those to be bigger (wallet, phone and keys, these are essential). All that said however I'm happy because they look great and perform (as riding shorts) even better.

Quickie re sizing; I usually wear S in Lycra shorts, but in casual wear jeans for example I'm between 30 and 31" (I get 31 where possible) and I wear them snug not baggy. Recommendations for size for these? 30 or 32... Thanks!

Asked by: theMUSETTE
Hi, it is always hard to advise on sizing as we all differ slightly. The Touring short does have a slim, tailored cut and we would advise trying the size 32. We do have a free 90 day return period should you find they do not fit.
