Women’s bib shorts for comfort and support

Designed both for training rides and sportive riding, the Rapha Women’s Bib Shorts offer exceptional performance in hot conditions. They are made from a matt, Lycra fabric (the same used in Rapha’s regular Women’s Shorts) that is extremely breathable and which also has excellent moisture transfer. The shorts use a chamois pad designed specifically for women riders and have a panelled construction to guarantee a superb fit. Flatlock stitching throughout means they won’t chafe, no matter how long or hard you ride. The legs feature tonal Rapha logos and a wide gripper that is knitted directly into the main fabric for improved comfort.

The bib section is made from two different mesh fabrics (both of which are cream to avoid showing through light-coloured jerseys) and cut high for a more flattering line. A close-knit mesh at the front with an open-knit mesh at the back improves breathability. Designed to be worn with a sports bra, the back of the shorts also has a large cutaway section for maximum breathability. Other styling elements include a polka dot tab.

If you’d told me a few years ago that I’d be about to recommend a pair of cycling shorts costing £160 I’d have had a very stern word with myself. I still don’t even own a dress costing that much. Plus I’d always held the view that Raphaites were mugs who had not only drunk the Kool-Aid but paid through the nose for the privilege. I considered the brand to be the height of style over substance - 90% monochrome marketing (justly lampooned here) and 10% Lycra. Then I tried their bib shorts.

Crikey, these are good. First, they look great. Super flattering. The material feels expensive - as well it should - and not even the tiniest of threads has come loose after a summer of hard riding and many washing machine cycles. The grippers at the bottom kept everything in place, without sticking or pulling on the odd stray hair like the Café du Cycliste shorts.

Rapha is quickly gaining a reputation as a go-to brand for boutique, high-quality and high-price cycling gear. At US$235/ £165/ AU$240 the Women’s Classic bib shorts perform better and last longer than many cheaper competitors, and remain more affordable than other elite or boutique alternatives.
