Three-season weather protective jersey made of a pioneering fabric

"...consider the fact that Rapha has discovered the Holy Grail in cycle kit - something totally and comprehensively water resistant that doesn’t boil you from the inside out"
Graham Hudson, The Times. Saturday February 20th. 2016.

The Pro Team Shadow Jersey offers a new approach to racing in bad weather. Using a stretch-woven fabric, the form-fitting jersey offers an unprecedented combination of protection against the elements and breathable comfort under duress.

Read the Pro Team Shadow feature »

The fabric used in Rapha’s Pro Team Shadow range is a truly revolutionary solution to an age-old problem: even the most expensive rainwear options are made from a plastic-feeling laminate material and are taped at the seams, resulting in a clammy jacket in which it is easy to overheat – not ideal for racing. The Pro Team Shadow Jersey’s fabric, however, has a DWR (durable water repellent) finish applied twice during the manufacturing process, making it ‘hydrophobic’ – water simply rolls off – and yet it is stretch-woven, meaning that tiny gaps of air allow body heat out, despite it compressing for an aero fit. The inner is brushed too, so the short sleeve jersey can be worn comfortably over a base layer, or even straight onto skin.

The Pro Team Shadow Jersey was developed to provide Team Sky’s cyclists with a jersey to race in that would protect them against the elements on changeable days. In frantic races, they can wear it from start to finish, avoiding trips back to the team car to collect or deposit gilets and rain capes. It is truly an all-in-one solution. Team Sky have been racing in jerseys made of the Pro Team Shadow fabric since the start of the 2015 season to great effect, especially during the Belgian Classics.

The cut of the jersey is streamlined to compact to your body shape in a race fit, and it has ¾ length sleeves for more protection on the arms. The chunky zip pull with grippy zipper is much easier to use than normal zips, perfect for when time and movement is limited during a race while the Pro Team-embossed gripper elastic on the rear hem keeps the jersey in place even during exertion. Three rear cargo pockets allow for storage while drill holes at the bottom of each one let rainwater roll straight out. There are also taped seams on the jersey’s shoulders for rainwater protection where it matters most.

Aesthetically, the Pro Team Shadow Jersey is jet black, and it has Rapha’s Pro Team Convict stripes design printed on the rear-right pocket and on the back of the arms. It looks just like the name would indicate, so that you can remain hidden in the shadows until the time comes to attack the race.

"The jersey is good down to around 6ºC with a regular base layer and should also be wearable on wet days when the mercury is in the upper teens. Summer then.

It showed itself best on a hill rep training session, working very hard on the way up, sweating, and then coasting back down at 50kph in cool air. The combination of breathability and windproofing is excellent."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing performance This is just a fantastic piece of kit. The fit feels awkward until you get on the bike, then everything clicks into place. Until yesterday I had only used it for early spring windy rides and it was perfect. Yesterday, my schedule had a narrow window for riding, and it was raining, so I donned my shadow jersey. I was amazed at how comfortable and dry it kept me, and I could actually see rain bouncing off it. Get one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive all rounder Purchased the shadow jersey with the matching arm warmers. Not cheap, but has proved extremely versatile and brilliant all rounder product. Have used it in 2-3 degrees with just a base layer, and stayed warm enough. Very windproof, its wicking properties appear very good, with base layer staying dry, although noticed some condensation build up in the rear pockets. In showers, the droplets of rain appear to just run off the jersey although I've not used in very heavy rain. Have traditionally purchased Assos, but this is my first Rapha as was looking for a gabba type product. Have been hugely impressed, and although very expensive, I would strongly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from this IS the rain jersey. The cut and material is the best of all rain jerseys that I have tried. Water literally slides off and is never on the jersey long enough to soak. I was so impressed with this piece, on 2 rain soaked rides, I purchased the Shadow leg and arm warmers the next day. The sleeves are my only gripe as I don't have thin arms and they are a bit tight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Waterproof, comfy, good for shorter rides Love this for anything under 60 in the wet.. but because it doesn't breath really well, it gets kind of clammy on longer wet rides. But that's to be expected with all the weather proofing this thing is capable of! Highly technical piece of kit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from diverse and looks great Keeps me dry and warm during long rides in Scotland's spring (10-14c). However, sleeves are floppy.

Hi is this jersey suitable to be worn in warm and humid conditions? Will the fabric be too thick?

Asked by: Edwiano_07
This jersey is breathable and is highly breathable and despite the streamlined design has tiny gaps which allow the body heat to be expelled. This garment is also designed to be durable in changing weather conditions including the rain. However, as we all regulate temperature differently it is hard to advice on the temperature range for individuals and differing exertion levels will also affect its properties.

If I'm a large in the other Pro Team kit would it be the same for the shadow jersey as I've read it comes up slightly smaller?

Asked by: Abs923
Hi, please refer to the size guide as far as possible. With the information you have provided, we would suggest you try a Large. For the garment to perform correctly, the correct size needs to be purchased to avoid stretching the fabric. Should you need to exchange, we have a 90 days return period.

Is this Pro Team jersey along with the new line of Pro Team Aero jerseys Treated with Coldblack and do they all provide UV protection as did the jerseys before?

Asked by: Designated
Hi, the shadow fabric does not have Cold-black technology. It will provide a very high-level of UPF protection, but we are unable to give an exact value as it can vary hugely depending if the fabric is stretched, or other factors such as saturation.

Are these (both the bibs and jersey) meant to be unisex or male only?  If the latter, when will the woman's version come out?

Asked by: Thad
Hi, the current range could be considered as unisex but a women's specific version is in development with the Canyon/Sram Women's team.

What are the contrasting qualities of this jersey vs the PT Softshell jacket?

Asked by: Sam Lian
Hi, There are quite a few differences between these two jackets so for a full comparison please refer to the products pages on the website. However a basic difference is the Pro Team Softshell is a thinner 'shell' jacket with an excellent all around water repellent nature. The Pro Team Jacket has more insulation while also offering a windproof and water-repellent treatment on the leading panels, the rear panels are made using Super-Roubaix for insulation and wicking where it matters.
