If you had done a straw poll of the 61,000 spectators that swamped the dunes of Koksijde on Sunday, very few would have predicted that Rob Peeters would be there to steal second place from his more illustrious countrymen. Nys, Albert, Pauwels, Stybar: these were the names on people’s lips, and with good reason. Between them these four have dominated the present cyclocross season, as they have done for the previous half a decade (or decade in the case of Nys). Cross throws up innumerable surprises, but this year the form book predicted it was going to be a whitewash for the big four. The writing was on the wall: the rest would be fighting for scraps.

Liège-Bastogne-Liège, known also as La Doyenne, is the oldest one-day race still in existence. First run in 1892 by L'Express newspaper, the 270km Monument takes place in the rolling, forested Ardennes region of southeast Wallonia. The voluptuous nature of the course makes it very punishing, add bad weather conditions and you have arguably the hardest of the spring classics

Although I’d been travelling for a few hours already, the day really began for me when I slid open the door of the train in Brussels. Belgian flags hung down from the luggage racks, on to a group of fans dressed in the same bold three colours, two of whom were wearing Santa Claus hats. I presume that they too had been travelling for a while, judging by the advanced state of the 20-pack of ‘Joops’ (or Jupiler to the rest of the world) they were having for breakfast. It was 8.45 am. The medicinal whiff of Red Bull soon followed, adding to their joyous state of mind.

The world championships kick off this weekend in Belgium, the one event that everyone looks forward to all year long. Sure, the mountain bike worlds is a big deal, as is the version that happens on the track. Even the road equivalent seems to get fans excited. But cyclocross is happening right here, right now. Up for grabs, a set of precious rainbow-colored stripes emblazoned on the iconic white skinsuit that every elite cyclocross racer dreams of stepping into this weekend.
