AW11 Sneak Peeks: the Finest Merino

What can we tell you about merino wool that you don’t already know? Well, apart from the unquestionable truth that this fabric is the natural choice for cyclists in the know, Rapha are soon to introduce even more fine-knit weaponry to their ever-growing arsenal of merino products. Not only are these new and updated offerings tailored from merino, with its breathability, softness, lightness, insulating and quick-drying properties, there are some gorgeous new hues (seen above) and style details to match.
We can’t reveal to you exactly what new goodies are joining the fleet, but here are a few clues, a couple of hors d’oeuvres, to get you salivating for the main event:
• Pairs of woollen beauties every gentleman (and woman) should step into, especially riding in the city.
• A firm favourite with the winter rider, helping them keep their chin up in the colder months, now in sumptuous new colours.
• Any limb not swathed in merino this season is missing out, hence these lightweight warmers.
• You’re wearing merino under where?
• You could wear this luxurious long-sleeve either riding the classics or racing the messengers.
Rapha’s AW11 range will be viewable in its entirety on 16th September

Finally! The Pro Team Long Sleeve Jersey?
Arco Visser
7th September 2011 09:08am
When you watch the video of the Galibier again on http://www.rapha.cc/galibier, you will see a preview of the new Pro Team long sleeve jersey. The two Rapha riders both wear the new design of the pro Team jersey in lime and black (I think). So actually there was already a sneak preview of some new jerseys two months ago ;-)

@ Joe and Jon: thanks guys. It was a hell of a job, but somebody had to do this sleuthing… I like the socks too Jon. This is gonna be an out-of-stock item soon, I guess.
Some other Rapha items I'm dreaming of at least once a week:
- Stainless steel Rapha version of the Independent Fabrication coffee tumbler, with Cycle Club logo (matching the Rocket Espresso for Rapha), fitting in a bottle cage, for the epic morning commutes;
- Knee high socks for those wintry commutes with the right leg of my Rapha jeans folded up, to protect my leg from snow and salt;
- Rapha thermal bidon, for those even more epic subzero 5 hour rides;
- A Rapha edition of the Riese & Muller 2012 race version of the Birdy folding bike with reflective dots on the side panels, lots of carbon, Rapha’s trademark left armband around the left front fork, robust Italian leather handlebar tape, and some stylish pink detailing;
- A Rapha + Paul Smith special edition jersey celebrating the London 2012 Olympic cycling road race (like the 2007 Grand Départ jersey);
- The Rapha cycling brogues with pink laces and recessed cleats;
- Pink suede Rapha Converse All Stars Hi tops with reflective tab, slightly reinforced sole and recessed cleats.
@ all the Rapha aficionados out there: what Rapha items are you dreaming of…?

Ad, I am dreaming of non pilling material and less faulty seams. that would be enough already.

@Ad - thanks for those. I think, apart fromt the Converse boots, they're all superb ideas for products… You never know! Dreams can become reality.

I am dreaming of a red 'Croix-de-Fer' jersey re-issue
I second the thermo bidon idea - good thinkin' Batman ;)

well I must agree with Stefan, almost every time I dress on my Italian arm warmers they make strange noise of ripping yarns, really scary :)
My dream products are aluminum rims which didn't produce dirty "something" when breaking in wet (white gilet, cream rain jacket etc.) :)
Anyway sneak peek looks great, looking forward :)

I'm dreaming of accurate sizing. How about you guys get your sizing right across the range, then worry about introducing more gear?
Oh, and a heavier weight Lycra in your Pro range wouldn't hurt either.

7th September 2011 02:18pm
@Joe, @Stefan is right - the pilling for the 3 jerseys I've bought in the last year is out of control - much different experience than my older jerseys which are bullet proof.
Also - we need the black lightweight jersey to return.

@Jan, Kim and Brandon - we are resolving all of these issues that inevitably occur with a growing company and expanding product lines. Our priority is always quality. Thanks for your feedback.

hard to wait untill the 16th. It really looks great ! What I'm dreaming of :
- winter tights with insert
- Rapha cologne & massage cream
- Helmet bag
@ stephan, @Jan, I've to say that I would also appreciate getting more robust rapha logo marking on my italian armwarmers ( it starts to peel off after just 3 months…)

@Stefan
I'm dreaming of Rapha introducing the Softshell Gilet in a brighter, more visible colour - maybe red, like the Classic Softshell, or cream like the Rain Jacket. Or even white. Just not black !
I have suggested this to Rapha, but have been told there are no plans for a new colour any time soon. Could really do with a Softshell Gilet right now, with the way the weather is looking in the Lake District !

Thanks Joe! Fantastic to know you guys listen.
Any comment isn't meant as a super negative - I've just been caught a few times with sizing being out.
This sort of thing happens and I think most of us accept it in a new(ish) company - the one thing you DON'T want to do is drop your quality! I bet if a few more of your customers were also seamstresses they'd be super impressed by the attention to build detail - I know I am.

def accurate sizing charts, not a general one that isnt accurate for half the products. Even do Rapha has excellent return policy, my customs office dont…
And make the xxl size a bit taller!
And make more city riding kit!
Ad Vermaas
7th September 2011 07:19pm
Hmmm, didn't exactly want to start a topic about quality… The idea was to celebrate the launch of the new range by sharing our wildest Rapha dreams, not our worst nightmares :-)
So, any ideas about exciting future Rapha products?
Berner Christian
7th September 2011 09:05pm
I would like to see a lot more products in leather and more accessories, bikes and so on. Some commercial stuff like coffee cups etc. should be for sale. At least I have bought rapha stuff for several thousand dollars, inclusive a rocket espresso machine no 4 out of 200.
Rapha stuff is great, but sometimes there is some information inside certifying chinese production, and this is a big anger …
I had a lot of ideas, if the rapha guys would be a little bit more open minded I would tell them.
Best regards, Christian Berner, Switzerland

Just got to say that my Rapha products are probably some of the best made I own, and the attention to detail across the board - design, fabric, detailing - is top notch.
I'd like to see a greater colour palette used as monochrome is great but you need to have a variation on the theme. It looks like this is being addresses given the sneak photos!

Can't wait for the Long Sleeve/ Winter Jersey that is not in black. As Arco said, saw it in the Galibier video….thought it was yellow but it was shot at night. Hints of the merino arm warmers in the PBP Kit List http://www.rapha.cc/the-pbp-kit-list. Definite buy. I virtually live in my merino arm warmers from P*#$l I*#$i. How about knee warmers too? Even better if you can make them with softshell/windproof fronts.
Dear Santa/Simon, can we have the espresso cups for Christmas, please?

I'd go for some nice mugs to be filled with Hasbean coffee :)
Simple logo ones, and then perhaps some classics ones with quotes, stage maps…

I would like to have a Rapha Merino base layer with a wind breaker (layer). This would perfectly fit in my range of Rapha items. I would like to wear it under my Rapha (short or long sleeve jersey instead of using a gilet or wind jacket.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE,repeat the orange colour of the stowaway jacket. Loved it, the colour really suited it and it was very visible (& lets face it, conditions are likely to be poor when you put it on…)i consulted other riders I saw with one who eulogised about it as a highlight of the Rapha (or any) range and resolved to buy one. Saved. Missed it.
Please bring it back. Been searching fleabay ever since but to no avail.

More hi-vis along the lines of the Brevet please.
Hi-vis pink stowaway, jersey, gloves, arm warmers and gilet would be good for starters.
You can never be too bright and too illuminated for the idiots in Range Rovers!

And another thing or two….
1) Next summer, bring back the Fixed T or put a pocket on the Logo T.
2) Some French guy supposedly once said, 'An army marches on its stomach' and so do we. How about a 'Rapha Recipes' Cookbook? The celeb cook bubble may have come and gone but how about a collection of pre/during/post ride recipes and part of the sales go to a charity? Hurricane or Earthquake relief/Prostate-Breast Cancer/Red Cross/Medecins Sans Frontiers….Just a thought.

What about a washing/cleaning detergent especially for the sportwool/merino pieces? I'm missing that at the moment…

If the core of Rapha will always be black, white and pink, then like the Giro shoes, it would be nice to have a helmet that goes along with that scheme.
I am not sure Rapha has ever made a piece that cannot be used in cycling so some of these other ideas may not be realistic:
-non-cycling hat/podium hat
-glasses-although I saw some in the SF store
-pink crew neck base layers
-off bike shoe to go with jeans - I think the belt is coming
-a high vis gilet hat goes with the core Rapha scheme
-I like (and only buy) jerseys with full zips because of the climbing near where I live
-after riding lounge pants
-1/2 shorts like the 3/4s but of lighter material for dead of summer
Beyond that - I like surprises.

I personally would like a tighter version (or maybe a more tapered version) of the Rapha trousers. Especally in black.
I brought all three pairs for riding and wearing at the office.They are like a firm handshake around your lower half, Its a pleasure to sit down in them and a pleasure to stand up.
Best part is, No one knows you are in extreme comfort whilst conducting buisness so the joke is on them.

I agree with bruce. A stylish helmet is really needed.
And a pair of proper winter gloves. The current ones are nowhere near insulated/waterproof enough for winter, especially not in scandinavia.

I would to see a country jersey especially made for the The Road World Championship 2012. This will be held in The Netherlands next year. Just as an idea (nothing more than that) the jersey could look like this. A black edition or orange edition. http://www.flickr.com/photos/avista/sets/72157627543519123/
