Bib shorts that keep you cool when others are losing theirs

If you are unsure of which bib shorts to choose, take a look at our new Bib Shorts Guide

When the temperature soars, these are the bib shorts to reach for. Created for the hardest, hottest and most demanding conditions, the Rapha Lightweight Bib Shorts are more comfortable in the peak summer heat. The soft, stretch fabric is more breathable and a lighter weight than other Rapha Bib Shorts, and it also incorporates a sunblock treatment. Elsewhere, there is a lighter mesh on the bib and a larger cutaway at the back, and the exclusively developed chamois pad is lightweight and perforated.

The lightweight shorts are available in two leg lengths –regular and short, cut 3cm shorter specifically for the hottest conditions – and feature an improved gripper and new colourways.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet Shorts Bought these shorts for the inaugural Ride Across Wisconsin with Jens Voight - this was a 175 mile single day ride with the Trek Factory team and 300 plus of their closest friends. I wanted a pair of shorts that would keep me cool and given me every advantage needed - I can tell you with certainty the Jens never saw me coming! The shorts are very well constructed and proved awesome in 50 miles of rain. They kept me cool and comfortable throughout with a super comfy insert. This is a very versatile short - you can ride it in a wide temp band - late spring to early fall.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Comfortable but durability concerns Bought these shorts for trip to French Alps as a lighter option to my usual Rapha Classic shorts. They are are comfortable and do seem to help keep things a little cooler in hot weather. However, after only half a dozen ride on my usual bike/saddle combination, the Lycra around the seat area is showing some abrasion. This is not apparent on my 2 year old Classics that have been worn numerous times. If the condition of the shorts deteriorates any further, I will consider returning them for Rapha's opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight Bibs - A Fashion Statement My fourth set of Rapha bib shorts, nothing wrong with the other three, but these are for the hotter summers we experience in Perth, Western Australia. They are certainly comfortable, perhaps a little less padding than the Classic bibs (though I have not tested this scientifically). They are nice and light, and very fashionable. There is a problem though. My wife caught me trying to get out for a ride with a base layer and jersey that did not match the colour of the leg band (in this case blue). This will not be a problem for Rapha though, as my wife is well versed in trawling the Rapha web site, and suggesting things I need.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Looks great, fits great, material quality is poor The fabric underneath the chamois is pilling after only 50km! I expected a more robust build for a premium bit of gear from Rapha. If this did not happen, I would give the product at least 4 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality Had these a few weeks now..I got them for indoor training on zwift which I do about 4 sessions a week..so decided to splash out on some high quality bibs...found these amazing quality and fit..just one tiny thing ...when I first used them the silicon gripper seemed a little tight on the thigh..got used to it now but that's the only thing I would alter..otherwise perfect!!!! :-))

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good quality These shorts have been worn through the summer. pad is comfortable, material nice and lightweight. the only problem is the shoulder straps seem a bit tight, I have size M in both these and the classic shorts, classic shorts fit fine, I am 70kgs 5ft 10.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great But Will They Hold Up I've waited a while to review these because I wasn't sure how they would hold up. After just one ride there was already a loose thread on the seam on the front of the left leg. Fortunately, it's absence seems not to have affected the durability of the shorts and after a month and several washings, I really like these shorts. They are a little tighter than the classic bib-shorts, especially at the leg-grippers. The first time I put them on, I wasn't sure how they would fit. I now look forward to hot and muggy days just to wear them. They are definitely lighter-weight but not at all transparent and show no signs of wear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight, but far from 'Lightweight' Within the realm of urban colloquialisms, 'lightweight' tends to be a negative term; yet in any sport, lightweight is a heaven-send. This being said, these Lightweight bibs are true heavyweight hard-hitters. I am more than pleased with the quality of the product--the seams are flat and well-finished, the chamois is divine, and the design of the product is second-to-none within warmer weather oriented cycling kit (though from my experience, the Pro Team Bibs are just as wonderful). Sizing-wise, the bibs are a bit more forgiving; when I order again, I will opt for an L in lieu of the XL which I thought I would need (legs are around 30" around in-season). Rapha once more hits the nail on the head with a high-quality product!

What's the biggest difference between this and the Pro Team Lightweight Bib Shorts? Why is there a price difference between the two? Is the choice of material or a different chamois?

Asked by: MadMike
Hi, there are many differences between the Pro Team Lightweight bib shorts and the Lightweight bib shorts and all the fine details can be found and compared on each of the product pages. The main difference would be the cut of the shorts with the Pro Team being a more aggressive race specific cut and the lightweight more similar to the Classic cut.

Is the pad intended to be an endurance specific one? I.e. 4+ Hours on the bike?

Asked by: Thecolombian
Hi. The pad is exclusively developed chamois and is lightweight and perforated specifically for the hottest conditions. It is hard to advise on the endurance specifics as this depends on personal fit, feel and riding style.
