A SATURDAY IN HELL

By Slate Olson • 16th August 2010 04:03pm • Posted in Events

I truly did not believe that the Northwest Gentlemen's Race course this year was as difficult as past editions when I set the day. With the heat, the wind and the sharp stones, it was reported to be the most difficult day on the bike many had experienced in years. Only seven of the twenty-seven teams finished the route with a complete roster.

A full story is forthcoming, but congratulations to the women of Veloforma for their victory this year, to the men of Ironclad for the overall fastest time (8:54) and to Jason Sager for taking the one v. one pro race over Ryan Trebon with a total time of 7:15.

Thank you to all the teams and riders who braved and survived.

Look forward to the film and more photos - looks and sounds like there was some suffering!

I was on a team for a while that had a rating scale for long hard rides.

>Epic
>>Brutal
>>>Death March
>>>>Dr Doom Training Ride

This one was solidly in the Death March category, and easily could have turned into a Doom ride with a wrong turn. If you don't know from Dr Doom, check out his blog to get an idea what I'm talking about. therepublicofdoom(dot)blogspot(dot)com

Thanks for the abuse Slate, can't wait for the full report.

If you can measure a ride by the amount of stories you can tell about it afterward, this year's RGR ranks up there pretty high. And while stopping every 200 yards for flats wasn't great for team momentum it was awesome for meeting and bitching to the point of laughing with the other teams and riders. Great to meet you all.

Thanks to Rapha and all the supporting crew - the ambition of these rides always makes it worth the trip up from SF. Looking forward the pics, film, report and next year's ride.

Damn, Slate, Damn.
That was tough. I went through 14 bottles Saturday and didn't pee until 10 pm. Kudos to Trebon, who rolled out 9 minutes before our team, alone, and was never seen again by us. (this one day after he spent 45 minutes off the front of the pro criterium) Kudos to everyone who was out there, riding, supporting, taking cool photos. Stay upright, everyone.

Slate - wish I could have made it down for this… if even to only cheer on the teams for this epic journey. Look forward to reading the full report and seeing more great photos. 2011 will be the year to add a Canadian team! Best - Brian
