A Prize from Hell

By Joe Hall • 22nd March 2010 02:26pm • Posted in Events

Juan Antonio Flecha, who finished 18th in the first Monument of the season on Saturday, Milan-San Remo, has kindly sent us a signed jersey. This will be the prize for the rider with the most punctures on Sunday the 11th April. And if you don't know already, this is the date of our very own Hell of the North, Rapha's homage to Paris-Roubix, which also takes place that Sunday. The ride will take us along some of the more demanding roads, lanes and bridleways of Hertfordshire before returning to north London to watch the race and enjoy beer and frites, Belgian style. Proof of punctures will be required…

I posted a comment elsewhere on the blog but I am just trying to find out if the Hell of the North ride (which looks great) is 'doable' on a fixed? The postings so far of the 'grave' don't look too bad but any comments welcome.

Hi Ross,
I think the ride is definitely 'doable' on a fixed gear. Just depends on your gearing… If you consider there will be a few shortish but quite steep hills, then work out what ratio you need. I would suggest anything over 75 gear inches might be tough, but then you may have legs of thunder.

Thanks Joe, I think I will give it a lash on the fixed and change my gearing a bit to suit. Looking forward to the whole thing and frantically trying to cultivate the the 'mo' and the ability to cheerfully chew grit :)
