Longer cut cycling bib shorts

A recent invention, 'three quarters' were the brainchild of Edwig Van Hooydonk. The Belgian hardman had the idea after winning the Tour of Flanders in 1989. Riding in horrendous conditions, the conventional shorts he chose to wear on that occasion had aggravated a recurring knee problem. His solution was a pair of cycling shorts that stretched below the knee and offered an elegant alternative to the wrapped bandages routinely used at the time. The new look (in smart WordPerfect dark blue) was introduced in 1990 and gained further international exposure when Van Hooydonk returned to Flanders to win again in 1991.

Rapha’s ¾ Bib Shorts use a special, fleece-backed Thermoroubaix fabric to ensure maximum comfort. As with Rapha’s regular bib shorts, the ¾ bibs are made from a luxury mesh material with a large cutaway section in the back to prevent overheating. The shorts also use the same, top-of-the-range pad from specialists Cytech with slim padding and a chamois finish. The ¾ bib shorts have flatlock stitching throughout to prevent chafing and are finished with soft gripper around the legs. Stylish white panels on the lower legs improve visibility.
